Cotton Production Contributes to Women Economic Empowerment in Injil District

Cotton Production Contributes to Women Economic Empowerment in Injil District

Shokrai, a mother of four children in village of Shadjian of Herat province had no skill to generate a sustainable income. The UNDP/GEP in partnership with the Herat Department of Agriculture provided technical assistance, cotton seeds, tools and equipment as well as training for her to be actively involved in cotton production. For five months, Shokria was supported by her husband to produce cotton at the field. Her hard work paid off by selling the product and earning $1200 which had a major economic impact in her life. Shokria's ongoing support of her husband resulted a positive impact on her social and financial status. She is now looking forward to continue and expand her business in the upcoming year, she stated: "Access to income has changed my life in a positive way and now my family members and husband's behavior has changed towards me, my success showed everyone at the village that an Afghan woman can equally earn a sustainable livelihood same as a man.
