Kabul, 18 June 2008: The Japanese Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, Mr Katsuhide Ariyoshi and the Deputy Country
Director and Officer in Charge of UNDP, Mr Ian Holland, held a Signing Ceremony for the Exchange of Notes this
morning to provide an additional 477 million yen ($4.5 million) to Afghanistan’s New Beginnings Programme (ANBP)
for the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG).

Kabul, 28 May 2008: UNDP Afghanistan Dari and Pashto websites launched by Ms. Fadzai Gwaradzimba, UNDP Chief, South and West Asia Division, Regional Bureau of Asia and the Pacific (RBAP) today 28 May 2008. Following UNDP audiences’ demand which includes governmental partners, media, academia, university students and Afghan public in getting more information on UNDP activities in local languages, UNDP Afghanistan launched its websites in two Afghan local languages when this information was only available in the English website www.undp.org.af before.

Upgraded Vocational Training Center in Nangarhar province was officially handed over to the local government
Nangarhar, 6 May, 2008: the project to upgrade Nangarhar Vocational Training Center is completed and the center was officially handed over to the local government of this province by UNDP Urban Development Group (UDG) today in Jalalabad. This is a part of a project for upgrading nine Vocational Training Centers in Nangarhar, Kandahar, Kunduz, Herat, Jawzjan, Bamyan, Balkh (Mazar-e-Sharif), Paktiya (Gardez) and Kabul provinces in Afghanistan.

New USD 12.5 million Netherlands Support to LOTFA
Kabul, 23 July 2007: The Government of Netherlands has committed a further assistance of USD 12.5 million to the Government of Afghanistan-UNDP supported “Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan (LOTFA)”. An agreement to this effect was signed by the UNDP Country Director, Ms. Anita Nirody and the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, Ms. Yvonne Stassen. Norway contributes USD 2.2 million to the operational support of the Afghan Civil Service Institute

USAID provides USD 8 million to Maintain Poppy Free Provinces
Kabul, June 2007 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is providing an initial USD 8 million contribution to the Good Performers’ Initiative as part of the Government of Afghanistan’s Counter Narcotics Trust Fund (CNTF). This new grant will be administered by the United Nations Development Programme. The Ministry of Counter Narcotics will coordinate and manage the initiative.

Afghanistan’s first youth parliament to complete its first session on 14th June
Kabul, 13 June 2007 – From June 10, 101 new young faces have been seen in the National Assembly. Young students from Kabul, elected by their peers from over 90 High Schools to the first meeting of the Afghan Youth Training Assembly, have gathered in the National Assembly to learn about a parliament’s role and function and to express their opinions about many issues of acute relevance to Afghanistan.
