First National ICT Conference of Afghanistan www.ictconference.org.af

April 03 2006: Afghanistan’s first ever National ICT Conference will be held later this month, jointly organised by the Ministry of Communications and the UNDP.

The MoC is leading the charge in efforts to establish a vibrant and progressive environment for the development and deployment of Information and Communications Technology in all sectors in Afghanistan.

The National ICT Conference is designed to celebrate and highlight ICT successes, create a forum for increased linkages between public and private sectors and to assess Afghanistan’s readiness to enter the global Information Society.

By working together, Afghanistan will look forward to using the best and latest technologies to realize its goals outlined in Afghanistan’s National Development Strategy and to meet its commitment outlined in the London Compact.

The MoC welcomes the attendance of high Government officials, representatives from provinces, donors, private companies, academicians and students to this conference.

The conference agenda will offer exciting discussions and interactive opportunities that will attract all who are interested in ICT and its role in the future development of Afghanistan.

Objectives

  • Provide a platform for creating synergies between the government, private sector, donor agencies and other stakeholders to form cohesive ICT development targets and programs for Afghanistan
  • Assess Afghanistan’s readiness to enter the global Information Society and create ICT awareness in Afghanistan on National and Sub-National levels
  • Identify opportunities for public and private sectors to work together in Afghanistan and to use ICT as a tool for meeting the country’s development goals
  • Kick off the National ICT Council of Afghanistan to coordinate major ICT activities among all key stakeholders
  • Launch .AF top level Internet domains and online registration

Conference Agenda

Day 1

  • Opening ceremonies and Welcome
  • Overview of achievements by the Ministry of Communications, ICT policies and future development plans
  • Important role of ICT in realizing future national development
  • Interactive panel discussion on National ICT Strategy and alignments with Afghanistan’s National Development Strategy and the Millennium Development Goals
  • Report on progress made towards strategic infrastructure development programs
  • Exhibition hall opening ceremony
  • Launch of .AF
  • Interactive panel discussion on possibilities for future growth and assessment of current constraints

Day 2

  • Investment opportunities in ICT and progress made by the private sector
  • Interactive panel discussion and overview of innovative Government ICT projects and eGoverment initiatives
  • Interactive panel discussion to assess the presence of technology in Afghanistan and the role the Private sector plays in ushering technological changes
  • Closing ceremonies
